This is part of a creative project called 100 Word, 100 Days. In this project I’ll be writing a 100 word piece about my experience as a new mother every day for 100 days. Read more here.

My husband has an elastic face, able to stretch his features in ways I cannot. I always thought it was a learned trait, one he deploys for emotional impact and comedic effect. But our daughter makes the same faces as him.

She opens one large eye at a time and twists her mouth into a snarl when she’s waking. She makes her lips into a perfect circle and thinks about if she’s hungry. She squishes all her features together when she is gassy or otherwise inconvenienced. It’s a shock and a delight to look and see my husband in her.
