This is part of a creative project called 100 Word, 100 Days. In this project I’ll be writing a 100 word piece about my experience as a new mother every day for 100 days. Read more here.

We have a thirty pound guard dog. His job, as he sees it, is to protect our house and family from danger. Danger like neighbors walking in their own back yard, pillows falling off the couch, or dogs barking across the alley. We think his job is to cuddle with us, which he’ll occasionally allow.

It’s too early to say he’s affectionate towards our daughter. But he does watch out the windows while she eats, checks in her bassinet when she cries, and sniffs her regularly. He values her because she’s valuable to us. And that’s not a bad start.
